Methods of DIY Basement Waterproofing
February 13, 2012 – In some areas of the country, basements are more common than others, but unfortunately, this is not correlated with areas you will have water problems and areas you won’t. The water might get in either because of groundwater seepage or because of some other issue. Luckily, Delaware waterproofing your basement is something that you can do yourself, if you know how.
It is easiest to waterproof your basement when you build it. If you are lucky enough to be thinking about this issue before your house is built, you can either take measures yourself or ask the contractor to do certain things. However, most people are stuck dealing with this issue in much older homes, where the problem is more complicated.
Because your basement occupies a hole in the ground that was made for it to be there, water can build up between the walls of the room and the dirt outside. Pressure causes the weakest points of the wall to crack and allow the water in after a long enough period of time. Most basements that leak do so where the wall and floor join.
In cases where appearance is not a major issue, the quickest solution is to open the area between the wall and floor a bit with a chisel, and fill it with cement. Certain kinds of putty intended for this purpose can be used as well. Your local home supply store might be a good source of potentially useful products. When dry, this can be painted.
For bigger problems, consult an expert. You still might be able to do the actual basement Delaware waterproofing yourself, but you will probably need guidance in order to figure out what needs to be done, and how to do it. Sometimes a local handyman can provide this expertise for a one-time fee that is a lot cheaper than having someone else do it for you.
